The FBI arrested ten people this morning on suspicion of being "deep cover" Russian agents. Yes kids, the Cold War isn't over yet! Nine of the ten were also charged with money laundering, and Justice Department officials said the group's mission was to recruit new intelligence agents for Russia.
Two of the accused spies, Richard and Cyntiha Murphy, reside in nearby Montclair, NJ. Neighbors described the couple as "nice people".
I'll bet. Commie spies would certainly fit right in among the residents of Montclair. "Progressive" doesn't begin to cover the demographics there. Barack Obama by 83%, only because the other 17% voted for Nader or some other fringe candidate. Montclair is hometown to just about every wacko left-wing group in North Jersey. NJ Peace Action, Code Pink, No Nukes Nuts Against Whaling, you name it, there's an office for it somewhere in Montclair.
A regular anti-war protest march kicks off every Friday at the corner of Church Street and Bloomfield Avenue. All the usual suspects turn out. Che T-shirts are a hot seller in the multitude of head shops and used clothing stores at the east end of town. The Watchung Plaza May Day celebration is always a big hit. The Montclair Unitarian Church has by far the largest congregation of all religious denominations. Combined.
No U.S. Army recruiting station though. Can't imagine why.
The Murphys certainly chose the perfect suburban locale to set up shop. Montclair is just chock-full of folks who would be extremely sympathetic to Vladmir Putin's Mother Russia.
It just seems odd to me that they would be the only two commie spies in such a hard-left pinko town. Statistically speaking you'd expect half a dozen at least, probably more.
Stay tuned. I'm sure we haven't heard the last of this one.
UPDATE 28 Jun 2010 22:50:
OK, this is too good not to pass along.
Pravda The New York TImes
takes great pains to paint the allegations as implausible at best. Here's
the money quote:
Jessie Gugig, 15, said she could not believe the charges, especially against Mrs. Murphy, who was an accomplished gardener.
"They couldn't have been spies," she said. "Look what she did with the hydrangeas."
Yeah, most spies cultivate orchids don't they?
