Remember when Steve Lonegan was New Jersey's conservative rock star?
He still is, of course. And he'll cruise to the GOP nomination in tomorrow's race to replace Frank "Weekend-at-Bernies" Lautenberg.
So why are all my Tea Party buds shilling for Alieta Eck?
Beats the crap outta me. They're deluded if they think she can win the nomination, let alone take on Cory Booker / Frank Pallone / Rush Holt / Sheila Oliver / Generic Democrat Obamabot.
Yet not a day goes by that I don't get another email or phone call exhorting me to ditch Lonegan and vote for Eck. Here's my answer — stop wasting my time. Stop wasting your time! Alieta Eck will never sit in the Senate. Never. Write it down so you don't forget.
Steve Lonegan was the Tea Party before the Tea Party was cool. He's been out in front of the fight for smaller government. He (alas unsuccessfully) tried to break New Jersey's cycle of borrow and spend budgeting. He's forgotten more about real world economics than Paul Krugman will ever know. He stood up to Chris Christie from Day One. And of course he was right.
Where was Alieta Eck during all that? More importantly, why is she a better candidate than someone who's been fighting for our side through thick and thin? Do we abandon our champion at his moment of triumph?
No, I don't think so.
I'm sure Dr. Eck's heart is in the right place. But this is not the time for dissent in the ranks. We have a real chance to elect a true conservative from New Jersey and begin the process of putting Dingy Harry Reid out to pasture.
Steve Lonegan can win. Alieta Eck can't.
It really is as simple as that.
Steve Lonegan for U.S. Senate. Because Cory Booker's coronation is not
inevitable, if we stick together and work our butts off.
