They expected 3.3 million sign-ups. They got 1.1 million. Break out the champagne!
The Obama administration announced early Sunday that enrollment in the federal healthcare exchange passed the 1 million mark in December as more than 975,000 people signed up between December 1 and the December 24 deadline to ensure coverage beginning on the first of 2014.
Officially, the administration put the total of people now enrolled at more than 1.1 million people now enrolled and boasted that the site was able to support 83,000 concurrent visitors on December 23, the next-to-last day before the sign-up deadline. By contrast, the administration reported only 27,000 sign-ups in October --the website's first, error-prone month -- and 137,000 in November.
Now before you get too excited, remember that 1.1 million figure isn't people who've actually paid for Obamacare. Nope, HHS isn't releasing that number, obviously because it's a fraction of the much ballyhooed total.
And nobody is still quite sure what's gonna happen on January 1st when at least a few of those folks, temporary Obamacare card in hand, show up at their doctor's office.
The political fallout from the website's calamitous rollout could pale in comparison to the heat that Obama might take if Americans who signed up and paid their premiums arrive at the pharmacy or the emergency room and find there's no record of their coverage.
I'm guessing hilarity will ensue.
Meanwhile, more than 6 million Americans won't be going to their doctor or pharmacy any time soon. They're the forgotten fallout from Obamacare.
Over six million Americans have now lost their health care coverage thanks to Obamacare. In fact, 6,171,890 Americans have already lost their health care coverage. This is just the foreshock as 80-100 million are expected to lose their employer based health care come next fall.
And then there's guys like me who got dumped from the health care plan we wanted to keep into a craptacular Obamacare-compliant plan with sky-high deductibles and astronomical out-of-pocket expenses.
Many will find they must pay costs up to $6,350 — on top of their monthly premiums — before their insurance pays anything for actual medical care. If they have a family, they may have to pay nearly $13,000 in an out-of-pocket "deductible" before insurance starts paying.
Yeah, that gives a whole new meaning to "affordable," don't it?
I can't wait for more surprises in 2014, how about you?
