Unionized teachers in Parisppany, NJ are hopping mad.
Teachers' unions plan to hit the ground in Parsippany Thursday to protest the proposed privatization of paraprofessionals and teachers' aides in the school district.
"Basically, (the Parsippany-Troy Hills Board of Education) is looking to let go of the paraprofessionals in the district because they don't want to deal with the ramifications of the Affordable Healthcare Act," said Vickie Walsh, UniServ Field Representative for the NJEA.
You know, I do believe she said that like it's a bad thing.
Walsh said the Parsippany-Troy Hills Educational Support Association, the union representing teachers' aides and paraprofessionals, received word on Monday evening during contract negotiations that the board of education planned to pass a resolution Thursday exploring privatization of at least 185 positions and outsourcing those jobs to a private company. Walsh said negotiations dissolved Monday over the district's responsibility for healthcare coverage.
Obama is turning us into a part-time nation. Deal with it.
Since the paraprofessionals and teachers' aides work 32.5 hour per week, they're considered "full time" employees and thus subject to the Employer Mandate. The dictrict does not currently provide them with health care benefits, but could be required to do so starting next year.
That costs money, probably a lot of money, and the Board of Education is constrained by a 2% spending cap. Ergo the choice is layoff some folks and provide health insurance for the rest, or outsource everybody and cut their hours to 29.5 per week.
It's a scenario that's playing out all across America. In companies big and small. And in cities and towns with vocal, and oftentimes militant, unionized workforces.
The unions are finding out the hard way that there ain't no such thing as free health insurance.
And it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of
whiny Obamabots either.
