The First Amendment to the United States Constitution reads:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
It is the bedrock on which we have built our republic. Freedom of speech. Freedom of the press.
In a breathtaking surrender to Islamist thought police President Obama has endorsed a UN resolution which shackles the free exchange of ideas.
The new resolution, championed by the Obama administration, has a number of disturbing elements. It emphasizes that "the exercise of the right to freedom of expression carries with it special duties and responsibilities . . ." which include taking action against anything meeting the description of "negative racial and religious stereotyping." It also purports to "recognize . . . the moral and social responsibilities of the media" and supports "the media's elaboration of voluntary codes of professional ethical conduct" in relation to "combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance."
Criticize Islam? Go to jail.
Pakistan's Ambassador Zamir Akram, speaking on behalf of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, made it clear that they understand the resolution and its protection against religious stereotyping as allowing free speech to be trumped by anything that defames or negatively stereotypes religion.
In Pakistan (and anywhere else that this resolution is championed) "religion" == "Islam".
Mock Mohammed? Go to jail.
Appalling doesn't begin to express just how egregiously noxious Obama's endorsement of this speech code really is. The President of the United States has discarded one of our most cherished principles and subordinated our rights to the rantings and ravings of the Arab street.
There is only one legal code in which defamation of religion is a crime — Islamic Sharia law. Our president has now endorsed Sharia as being superior to the U.S. Constitution.
Welcome to the Islamic States of America. Obama Akbar!

Technorati is indexing me again! They had to make a code change to fix the problem with my blog getting stuck in their queue. Kudos to Eric M. and the guys at GetSatisfaction.com where they have "community powered support for Technorati".
Well, they're "sorta, kinda" indexing me anyway. It's on a 24 hour tape delay or something. So I never get picked up by Memeorandum because they pull from Technorati and Technorati has stuff I posted yesterday listed as my latest blog entry. And that's old news to Memeorandum.
Wankers.
