Note: If you're a West Orange voter who got here searching for information on Mr. Orphanidis, I invite you to read the "Updates" at the end of this other post, as well as the short update below.
Apropos my "plead guilty, keep your government job"
post from earlier today, self-appointed Taxpayer Advocate Phil Orphanidis
released the following statement:
In March of 2012 Essex County Sheriff's Clerk Rocio Rivera was sentenced to third-degree absentee ballot fraud. As a part of plea deal, Rivera was to resign her position as the Clerk of Essex County Sheriff's Office. That never happened.
Phil Orphanidis is taking a hardline stance on corruption in Essex County saying, "There's no question that Rocio Rivera should immediately step down from her position as the Clerk of Essex County Sheriff's Office. She committed serious voter fraud and made a deal to stay out of jail in return for 3 years' probation and stepping down from her position. It's time Essex County residents, the legal system, and the political system holds her to her side of the deal."
"It's not right that Essex County residents have to stomach this kind of news. There's a better way to governing than this."
Phil camps out at Freeholder meetings, trying diligently to hold county government's feet to the fire. I'd love to see him get up at the next meeting and ask the board to comment for the record on this latest travesty.
UPDATE 09 Feb 2016 10:55:
What a difference 4 years makes.
Phil Orphanidis now works for Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop. And he's good friends with Jersey City Councilman Khemraj "Chico" Ramchal, he of the cushy no-show job, among other transgressions.
Curiously, Phil hasn't called on his friend Chico to resign.
Interesting, eh?
