Chris Christie really ought to switch parties. Because he's giving Republicans a bad name. Again. Late Friday, since stuff is less likely to be noticed when it's released late on a Friday, our civil-liberties infringing governor issued sweeping new proposals for more regulation of gun ownership in the Garden State.
The plan calls for expanding New Jersey's already strict gun control laws, expanding government-funded mental health treatment, making it more difficult for kids buy or rent violent video games, requiring that would-be gun owners show government-issued IDs and bolstering penalties for gun-related crimes.
Ah yes, another photo ID requirement. When is he gonna propose showing a photo ID to vote? I'm not holding my breath.
"It's hard for me to sit here today and say, 'If all these things got imposed we'd see an 'X' percentage drop in gun violence in this state.' I don't know," said Christie. "Bad people are going to do bad things and so, would greater penalties deter people? You hope they do."
Because all the laws and penalties we have now are taking a bite out of crime. Oh, wait…
He's also going to institute stricter background checks, including searching of medical and mental health records. So if you ever saw a shrink, or took Prozac, or maybe just confided in your family doctor about some stress or anxiety? Sorry, no gun for you!
What part of "Shall Not Be Infringed" is so hard for Chris Christie to understand? New Jersey doesn't need stricter gun laws, New Jersey needs to respect the rights of honest, law-abiding gun owners. And maybe focus on catching criminals, you know, the guys who don't follow the law now, and won't follow these new laws either.
Feh. It's easier to say you're "doing something" if you just create a whole
new class of criminals and then crack down on them. I expect that nonsense
from Democrats. I don't want it from the guy who thinks he'll be the
Republican presidential nominee in 2016.
