How's this for a lame threat? Faced with the prospect of having to contribute a measly $700 bucks toward their gold-plated health benefits the NJEA is warning that as many as 30,000 teachers may take early retirement rather than cough up the dough next year.
Come on NJEA, you can do better than that! Double down on your threats. Do I hear 60,000?
Governor Christie has played this one masterfully. When a private company wants to incentivize early retirements they generally have to fork out severance money or pad the pension by tacking on extra years of service.
Some of the highest paid employees in the system are falling over themselves to take early retirement and it won't cost the state one extra dime. In fact, according to Education Commissioner Bret Schundler, the new hires who will replace these overpaid whingers could cost the taxpayers up to 83% less. And early retirement generally means a smaller pension payout so we'll save money there too.
