Miscellaneous thoughts on a Monday morning.
Former KKK Grand Kleagle and occasional United States Senator Robert C. Byrd has died. Among his many noteworth achievements Senator Byrd voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and against the confirmation of the only two African-Americans ever nominated to the Supreme Court (Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas).
Naturally this makes him a hero to liberals everywhere, because what really mattered to them was the "D" after his name.
If you want to celebrate Independence Day with a Bang! the Battleship New Jersey Foundattion has just the thing for you. They're auctioning off the chance to fire the New Jersey's 5 inch guns at the end of the fireworks display over the Delaware River on July 3rd. Just blanks, but you'll make a big boom and a super-bright flash. Bidding starts at $500.
"The Right of the People to Keep and Bear Arms Shall Not be Infringed." Why is that those simple words lead to so much misunderstanding? Where are those "emanations of penumbras" when we need them?
Three days after Firefox added a new "crash protection" feature, Mozilla rushed out a patch to prevent it from shutting down Farmville. Wait a sec. They enabled a feature which killed Farmville and now they're going to turn that feature off? Why?
The U.S. Supreme Court refused to reinstate a federal lawsuit seeking to confiscate hundreds of billions in tobacco company profits to fund a national campaign to curb smoking. The author of the government's case? Solicitor General Elena Kagan.
She'll be on Capital Hill today pretending to answer questions related to her nomination to sit on the Supreme Court. The Court that just told her to get stuffed.
There is little doubt that Kagan will be confirmed by the Senate.
That first Monday in October sure is gonna be awkward this year.
