The response I received from Embassy Suites regarding the Letterman Sponsor boycott has been noticed by the media. TVweek.com says "Conservatives Call For Boycott of Letterman Advertisers-Embassy Suites Says It Has Pulled its Ads from CBS.com." They mention me by name!
One of the advertisers targeted last week was Hilton Hotel Corp's Embassy Suites, because its ads appeared on the page for "Late Show with David Letterman" at cbs.com. Conservative Blogger Chris Wysocki says he contacted Embassy Suites and received this email reply:
Baltimore Sun TV critic David Zurawik links the TVweek.com story, and again links to me by name. Mr. Zurawik noted the effect the boycott movement had on Embassy Suites:
One of the more intriguing aspects of the report is the alleged email a blogger received from a major advertiser seeking to distance the product from Letterman. This is where the rubber meets to the road in television, and it is surprisning that CBS has yet to comment on the matter given the coarse nature of Letterman's word and the fact that they were directed at the child of a public figure, a category of people considered to be out of bounds for such attacks.
"a major advertiser seeking to distance the product from Letterman." It's not an "alleged" email; I wrote to Ms. Ray and she wrote back. Other folks wrote to her too, and received similar replies.
The boycott is working folks! It's getting noticed.
In another column Mr. Zurawik notes:
I can't wait to hear what Leslie Moonves, Letterman's boss and the man who ultimately fired Don Imus, has to say on the matter.
Me neither Mr. Zurawik, me neither. Eventually Mr. Moonves is going to have to make a statement. Will he defend the indefensibile? Or, will he take a stand for decency on television?
UPDATE 15 Jun 2009 20:26:
Donald Douglas notes I got results and encourages us to keep at it.
And Cynthia Yockey is leading the charge to get Letterman fired. She kindly links to me as well, and offers a ton of great advice on how to ratchet up the pressure on CBS and Letterman's sponsors. Pay particular attention to her Handy Fire David Letterman Kit (Part 1). Cynthia also notes Letterman is going to air another non-apology apology tonight. Somebody get this bozo a bigger shovel so he can dig himself in deeper!
UPDATE 15 Jun 2009 20:56:
TVguide.com confirms what I already reported, Embassy Suites pulled their ads!
"We received lots of e-mails from concerned guests and we assessed that the statement that he made was offensive enough to our guests and prospective guests that we elected to take the ads down," Walker said. She declined to release the cost of the ads.
CBS declined to comment Tuesday.
But do they link me? Oh, well. They do link FireDavidLetterman.com.
And still, CBS "declined to comment". Nice. Remember a year or 2 ago when folks sent peanuts to CBS to lobby for another season of Jericho? How about we send Maalox to Les Moonves; he probably needs some by now!
