Immigration reform is back in the news. Sigh. The only "reform" I want to see is discounted one-way bus tickets.
Anyway, Fox News has a handy-dandy comparison of the failed 2007 immigration reform proposal with Marco Rubio and The Gang of Eight's new and improved "Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act."
That old one died because it was too lenient on illegal alien lawbreakers, and it failed to protect our borders. So what did Rubio's merry men come up with this time? Something worse.
Last time: Go back home and do it the right way.
This time: Automatic "Path to Citizenship," and here's your Green Card! Don't
forget to vote Democrat.
Last time: The border must be secured first.
This time: Janet Incompetano has six months to come up with a border security
"strategy."
Last time: Up to 200,000 "guest workers" eligible each year, for 5 years.
This time: Welcome Braceros!
It installs a new "W" visa for up to 200,000 low skilled immigrants, and another 120,000 "merit based" visas annually for extremely talented immigrants. It removes any caps for extremely talented individuals in the arts, education, sports and sciences. It also increases from 65,000 to as many as 180,000 visas for U.S. businesses, known as H1Bs.
Last time: All employers have to use E-Verify prior to the start of any guest
worker program.
This time: All employers are required to sign up for E-Verify within 5 years.
The guest worker thing starts immediately.
Last time: No federal benefits (except Obamacare, ugh) for guest
workers.
This time: Obamacare and in-state tuition for everybody, federal welfare
eligibility after 13 years, and
MarcoPhones!
According to the newly filed bill, immigrants who are allowed to enter the United States under a work visa, will be 'granted' a taxpayer funded cellular phone. Move over "Obama phone," we present the new 'Hola, Como Estas?!' MarcoPhone.
And to what I'm sure is your utter surprise, the company which makes these new MarcoPhones is based in Rubio's district.
Thanks Mr. Conservative Hispanic Wonder-Republican. You're just the kind of
guy we need; if by "we" you mean "Democrats." With friends like you, La Raza
has already won.
