Someone needs to bitch-slap John Boehner. Hard.
Because it looks like he's about to surrender on tax hikes.
According to Politico, Boehner is willing to sign off on as much as $1.2 trillion in tax hikes over the next ten years in exchange for as little as $400 billion in Medicare cuts that do not even begin to take effect until 2023. That's right: Boehner is about to sign off on a deal of $3 dollars in tax hikes now in exchange for $1 dollar in spending cuts 10 years from now.
Sorry, no sale. Let the fiscal cliff hit. The country voted for this shitstorm. Now it's time to pay the piper. Remember, sequestration was Obama's idea. Nancy Pelosi cheered it. Harry Reid heralded its passage. Let them own it!
Besides, this so-called "deal" is laughable in terms of deficit reduction. $1.2 trillion of new revenue, over ten years. Then $400 million in spending cuts over the next ten years (maybe). Meanwhile Obama is adding at least a trillion dollars to the deficit every single year! For those of you who are doing the math at home that works out to $17.2 trillion in new debt, on top of the $16 trillion we've already got.
Yeah, I know, Obama says he's not good at math. He's great at demagoguery though.
Everyone should pay some income tax. It's called "skin in the game". Then
folks will discover that "free stuff" isn't actually "free".
