So really, 120,000 methanol addicts get to decide who won't be our next president? What's up with that?
It's the Wednesday after the Iowa caucuses, let the Republican presidential field winnowing begin!
First out, Michele Bachmann.
Soon to be joining her, in all likelyhood, Rick Perry. He's back home in Texas "reassessing" his campaign. Beats me why though. Soldier on!
If I were Perry, I'd wake up tomorrow, say I refuse to surrender the Republican Party into the hands of big government conservatives after all the gains the tea party has made, and then announce I'm firing all my political staffers and communications staffers and ask South Carolina to help me reboot to victory. Make it an Alamo stand and, if like at the Alamo Perry goes down, perhaps there'll at least be a rallying cry for small government conservatism left over.
Yes, now is not the time to quit, not when the alternatives are three Big
Government statists and a loon
ostrich.
Here's where we stand.
Mitt Romney "won," if by winning you mean going all-in to garner fewer votes than he got in 2008 while almost getting beat by someone who spent essentially no money. Yeah, Rick Santorum came this close to scoring an upset victory over the guy he endorsed 4 years ago. And that's only because he's the last man standing who's not named Mitt Romney. Apparently not even Iowans are nuts enough to pin their hopes on Jon Huntsman.
Look out for when Santorum gets hit with the withering fire which already blasted Perry, Gingrich, Bachmann, and Cain off the frontrunner perch. It's coming, and it's not gonna be pretty. A homosexual dirtbag named Dan Savage has already seen to that. Add in Santorum's backstabbing endorsement of Benedict Arlen Specter over actual conservative Pat Toomey and you have an unelectable RINO hiding behind that big smile and goofy sweaters.
Our other "not Romney" contestant is Newt Gingrich. Blech. Newtie is for gun control, Cap and Tax, and an expanded role for federal education bureaucrats. That's not any brand of "conservative" that I'd subscribe to. And let's just say that his marital foibles won't ever endear him to the evangelical set.
Remember, the big takeaway from last night is this, 75% of Iowa Republicans don't want Mitt Romney to be president. This race is a marathon, not a sprint. Rick Perry is the only conservative candidate with executive experience and the will to make Washington "as inconsequential to our lives as possible." It's time to unite behind a real conservative.
UPDATE 04 Jan 2012 14:57:
Donald Douglas says it's official: Perry is staying in.
Perry The President.
I like the sound of that!
