I'm beginning to think that New Jersey election laws are so malleable because they're crafted out of Play Doh™. First it was the Torricelli Switcheroo, where a court decided "at least 30 days" meant "less than 30 days" so Frank Lautenberg could come out of mothballs to rejoin the U.S. Senate. Now another set of judges has crafted the "famous Olympic athlete exception" for nine-time gold medalist Carl Lewis.
Lewis wants to challenge incumbent Republican Dawn Marie Addiego for NJ State Senate in Burlington County's 8th legislative district. NJ election law establishes a four-year residency requirement for all state Senate candidates. Since he voted in California as recently as 2009 Lewis was declared ineligible to run by state election officials. Seems fair, right? Where you vote is a pretty reliable indicator of where your political home is.
But Carpetbagger Carl sued, because that's what Democrats do when they don't like a law.
And yesterday, a three judge federal appeals court panel ordered him back on the ballot. Why? Because he's famous.
Judge Thomas Ambro, who wrote the decision, was skeptical of the state's case, saying the requirement exists to make sure candidates know their districts and voters know the candidates.
"It's hard to say that this candidate doesn't know the local issues affecting the 8th Legislative District, and it's kind of hard to say the voters don't know who he is," Ambro said.
It's the Famous Guy Exception!
If Chris Wysocki was running he'd have to live in Burlington County for four years. But Carl Lewis? He has nine gold medals! Everybody knows who he is! The law doesn't apply to him!
Unbelievable.
These judges just make stuff up as they go along. We The People be damned.
