No doubt
much to the chagrin of Joe DiVincenzo and George Norcross.
Gov. Chris Christie today delivered a strong endorsement of Republican Steve Lonegan, a former rival, for the U.S. Senate special election in October.
Despite the fiery attacks the two have traded over the years, Christie pledged to help Lonegan on the fundraising circuit, on the stump, and by deploying two of his top surrogates on the campaign trail: Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and interim U.S. Sen. Jeffrey Chiesa (R-N.J.), who is slated to endorse Lonegan on Wednesday.
"We still have too many people across America who have too much government in too much of their lives," Christie told a jam-packed crowd of Republicans assembled in the Hunterdon County GOP headquarters. "Steve will be a clear and powerful voice for putting people back in charge of the government, not government in charge of the people."
And he vowed to campaign again with Lonegan in the 60 days before the special U.S. Senate election, in which Lonegan faces the well-known and well-financed Newark mayor, Cory Booker. "This will not be the only time that Steve Lonegan and I will be together between now and the special election on Oct. 16," Cristie said.
OK, so I was wrong. My cynicism got the better of me there. Christie is going to help Lonegan. And as a proxy against Cory Booker, Chris Christie is indeed formidable.
Steve and I have believed and still believe in so many of the same things. We believe in lower taxes and limited government," Christie said. "We believe in people having more freedom to do the things that they believe are right for themselves and their families, without government interfering in those choices. We believe in a strong America, and a smart America, and a right America."
Who wrote that line? Mark Levin? Rand Paul? Because it's pure conservative gold.
Does anyone here think that Cory Booker believes in Freedom? Or Liberty?
"I know that Steve is going to give Cory Booker some tussle over the next 60 days," he said. "There is a clear choice between Steve Lonegan and Cory Booker for the United States Senate. One will support the president at every turn; the other will make principled judgments that he believes are not only in the best interests of America, but in the best interests of New Jersey, and that guy is Mayor Steve Lonegan."
Game on!
