Technorati is indexing me again! They had to make a code change to fix the problem with my blog getting stuck in their queue. Kudos to Eric M. and the guys at GetSatisfaction.com where they have "community powered support for Technorati".
Well, they're "sorta, kinda" indexing me anyway. It's on a 24 hour tape delay or something. So I never get picked up by Memeorandum because they pull from Technorati and Technorati has stuff I posted yesterday listed as my latest blog entry. And that's old news to Memeorandum.
Wankers.

Recent headlines from my Posterous Blog:
Anyone who went to Cedar Grove High School in the 60's, 70's or 80's has heard that line courtesy of Mrs. Lehr. She would recite the grades by student name after every test, First the A's, delivered with praise. Then B's, C's, and D's. If she didn't call your name you already knew, but of course she made it official — "The others have 'F'."
Teachers have to worry about damaging Little Johnny's feelings now so the days of publicly posting or reciting grades are sadly over. It sure was a powerful motivator though. Nobody wanted to be included with "the others". And when you were in that "A" list you were on top of the world.
The Mount Olive, NJ school district is poised to perhaps introduce some of that motivation back into the classroom. No more D grades.
The grade of D on a report card is admittedly lousy, but it's still passing and better than an F. If Mount Olive schools superintendent Larrie Reynolds has his way, D won't be an option anymore.
In an effort to motivate students who only do enough work to pass, Reynolds has called for the elimination of D from the grading scale.
Reynolds, who leads the suburban district in western Morris County, said he hopes the new grading scheme will take effect in September, and is aimed at students who barely avoid an F but are capable of doing better.
"This is the message I'd like to get out," Reynolds said. "It's basically to the kids who have a D. Choose this day to decide what kind of student you're going to be. Choose to become a learner or choose to do the class over again, but get off the fence."
If it works this could be a great way to encourage the underachievers to up their game. Or it could simply lead to grade inflation as the D morphs into a C so Little Johnny's self esteem remains intact.
I hope Superintendent Reynolds has the backbone to stand up to those who would make excuses for the D students.
Scott Ireland, who has two children in the district, said he favors the plan in concept but wants to make sure that kids who try hard but can't do better than a D are given extra help to adjust.
"I appreciate that (Reynolds) is trying to up the bar," Ireland said. "What I worry about is in the spectrum of academic ability, kids fall all over the spectrum, which includes what one might call D kids. I worry about the kids who try hard and still work to get D's."
Twice in one week I get to quote Master Yoda! "Do, or not do. There is no try."
Or if you prefer, Dean Wormer: "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life son."
A grade of D just isn't good enough anymore. The days of the kid who squeaked by in school landing that $28/hr factory job are long gone. In our world a C barely cuts the mustard. And I don't buy the premise that some kids can't do better than a D. It's time to replace the false platitudes which come from the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality and replace them with the actual sense of accomplishment you get from putting in the effort and seeing concrete results.
Because in the end there really is no substitute for hard work. Just ask
Mrs. Lehr.
