Atlantic City's bread and butter is day-trippers. And these days the charter bus trade is circling the drain.
Fewer people are traveling to Atlantic City, especially on casino buses.
The South Jersey Transportation Authority says the number of casino buses and passengers has dropped for the past 24 months.
The Press of Atlantic City reports 140,000 people rode the buses in February, the latest month statistics were available. That represented 30 percent fewer than February 2012 and about half the number of passengers two years ago.
Who's got money to gamble when gas, food, and shelter are so expensive? Contrary to anything the White House might tell you, the economy has not improved.
How do I know this? Because poverty in this country has now reached levels not seen since the 1960s, even as the government spends more than ever on the poor.
In Decemeber, a government report showed that the government is spending almost $170 a day per household on those who are under the federal poverty line and receiving welfare. That's $1,190.00 per week or almost $62,000 per year that was taken from someone more likely to invest in and build the economy.
I'm sure these two statistics are just a coincidence, right?
There is one bright spot though. The Obamas bravely party on. No expense is spared in their relentless pursuit of top quality entertainment and exotic vacation travel. Through thick and thin they courageously live high on the hog, presumably inspiring us all with their stoic disregard for the trials and tribulations of ordinary Americans.
We can eat cake.
