It's 105 in the shade. You're trudging down the sidewalk, sweat pouring off your brow, when a refreshing blast of cool air beckons from an open door, enticing you to escape the heat inside a pleasantly air-conditioned store. You enter, grateful for the respite, and since you needed some new shoes anyhow, you welcome the opportunity to shop in comfort.
Effective marketing in action!
And then, behind you comes The Green Police, wagging their finger and bearing a $200 summons.
Yes folks, in New York City it is against the law for a store to leave their front door open when the air conditioning is on.
And thus, hard at work squandering your tax dollars, the inaptly named Department of Consumer Affairs patrols the city in search of air-conditioning scofflaws. Nine stores were cited this week, and told that next time the fine doubles to $400.
Sure it's the store's air conditioning. They're paying for it, they ought to be able to do with it as they please. But we all know what happens when liberty encounters the Nanny State; liberty loses every time.
Cooling off the outdoors causes Global Warming! Or something. The eco-zealots
said so. They wouldn't
lie to us, would they?
