And here you thought the First Lady had no constitutional powers.
Welcome to the Evita Peron phase of the Obama dictatorship, wherein Michelle Obama gets to punish schools and teachers who flout her lunch laws.
The federal government is taking steps to fine schools that do not comply with first lady Michelle Obama's school lunch rules.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service issued a proposed rule Monday to codify parts of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which was championed by Mrs. Obama.
The regulation would punish schools and state departments with fines for "egregious or persistent disregard" for the lunch rules that imposed sodium and calorie limits and banned white grains.
I won't hold my breath waiting for her to fine Sidwell Friends though, because I assure you, her little princesses don't eat the crap she forces our kids to eat.
Nah, she goes after the powerless, first.
A West Virginia preschool teacher was threatened with fines for violating the rules by rewarding her students with candy for good behavior in June 2015. The teacher ultimately did not have to pay, but the school had to develop a "corrective action plan" with training on the policies.
She says "corrective action plan," I say Indoctrination. ThoughtCrime will not be tolerated!
How about we impose a "corrective action plan" on the Obamas, starting with a crash course in federalism and the constitution?
Does anyone seriously believe this is what our Founders had in mind when they sought to establish a federal government of limited powers? Instead we now have a bloated, wasteful, inefficient and malevolent government whose first instinct is to reach for the stick to make you to eat that carrot.
Liberalism: ideas so good they have to be mandatory.
Obey, peasant!

What does it say when your party's annointed front-runner gets blown out three times in one day by a raving lunatic?
Well, if you're the Democrats, it says you need to up your voters' medication levels. Or maybe it means your candidates suck.
Democrats in Alaska, Washington, and Hawaii all favored socialist loon Bernie Sanders by an average of 4 to 1 over Hillary "it's my turn dammit" Clinton.
For her part, Hillary blamed the lopsided vote totals on a YouTube video. She promised to have the film maker arrested before sunrise. Crucifixion might have to wait though...
OK, seriously, who in their right mind votes for Bernie Sanders? He's a joke. His policies created Cuba. And Venezuela. And North Korea. If you want that, and I can't imagine why you would want that, but hey, to each his own, save us all the trouble and move to one of those socialist paradises. They're ready for you. Leave your freedom on the tarmac.
What these results say to me is, Hillary is toxic. People would rather vote for bread lines and gonorrhea than see her in the White House. Which comes as no surprise, because she is variously described as "domineering," "uptight," "icy," "polarizing," and "calculating" by other Democrats.
If only the Republicans would give us a real alternative, America would be eternally grateful.
Hint: Donald Trump isn't it.

Ecotwit insanity on steroids: They paved paradise to put up a solar farm.
A theme park in New Jersey has won approval to cut down nearly 15,000 trees to make way for a 21-megawatt solar farm.
Jackson Township's planning board on Wednesday granted Six Flags Great Adventure's request to move forward with the project that opponents argue will have a devastating effect on the environment.
Solar energy devastates the environment! Now that's funny!
You can't make this stuff up.
You know what's even funnier?
"This gives green energy a black eye. You cannot cut down a forest for solar panels. That's the opposite of being green," said Jeff Tittel, executive director of the Sierra Club of New Jersey, one of the groups formally objecting to the project. "You don't destroy a habitat in a forest in the name of clean energy."
Said the guy who wants solar panels on every office building in the universe and a windmill in everyone's back yard (except his, of course).
If only there was a carbon-neutral generating plant nearby that wasn't being mothballed 10 years early due to endless complaints from Jeff and his merry band of anti-nuclear luddites. And if only there wasn't a replacement reactor on the drawing board that, you guessed it, is rabidly opposed by You Know Who.
Sorry econuts, you made your green bed. Now reap what you've sown.
Because when the going gets green, the greenery gets bulldozed. That's Progress!

Try not to laugh. But Dear Leader went to Cuba and praised the Castro brothers' record on human rights.
Speaking to reporters in Havana Monday, President Barack Obama said that, "hopefully," the United States can learn a thing or two from Cuba's record on improving basic, human rights.
"President Castro, I think, has pointed out that it, in his view making sure that everybody is getting a decent education or health care, has basic security in old age, that those things are human rights as well."The president continued, "Hopefully, we can learn from each other."
I'm sure he's especially interested in learning how to lock up his political enemies. Because Cuba is really good at that.
Counter-protesters and police broke up an anti-government demonstration in Havana hours before U.S. President Barack Obama arrived for his historic visit.
About 300 government backers surrounded about 50 members and backers of the Ladies in White group, shouting insults and revolutionary slogans. There was some shoving back and forth.
The women were taken into custody by female police officers and loaded onto buses in an operation that lasted about 10 minutes.
Thomas Friedman and George Soros would be so proud.
This is, of course, how Obama and the Democrats believe government should operate. When a Republican is president, dissent is the highest form of patriotism. But under Obama, dissent is punishable, perhaps not by death, but certainly by lesser means, up to and including loss of jobs, friends, family, and freedom. It's the modus operandi of ever left-wing cause and group around (just look at what the homofascists do to anyone who gets in their way), and now we see that Barack Obama very much wants to make it the official policy of the United States government.
"Wherever there is a jackboot stomping on a human face there will be a
well-heeled Western liberal to explain that the face does, after all, enjoy
free health care and 100 percent literacy."
— John Derbyshire

It cost $34 million dollars to build. It was a white elephant before it ever opened. But at long last, Essex County is out of the baseball stadium business. And I suppose we should be grateful that County Executive For Life Joe DiVincenzo managed to only lose $11 million dollars on the deal.
Newark Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium has a new owner.
On Monday, city and Essex County officials announced that an agreement has been reached between the City of Newark, Essex County and the Essex County Improvement Authority to sell the Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium at 450 Broad Street to Lotus Equity Group for $23.5 million.
The sale includes the stadium and more than 7.5 acres of land, according to a news release.
Lotus plans to build a mixed-use high rise tower in its place, NJ.com reported.
Of course Joe D is patting himself on the back.
"We are very excited about the future development of the Broad Street site where the Bears and Eagles Stadium currently is located," said Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. "This dynamic project will contribute immensely to the economic revitalization of Essex County and Newark, and serve as a catalyst and anchor in the northern section of the city's downtown."
Gee, that's almost exactly what he said when he built this boondoggle back in 1999.
What makes anyone here think he'll be less wrong today?
I predict that within 10 years a place where you might once have heard the
crack of a bat will be a place where you can score some crack. Because Newark
is where dreams, and tax dollars, go to die.

There's a not so subtle message being sent to Jews in North Bergen and Clifton New Jersey: die. Because elected officials in both towns have joined the city of Paterson in promoting the Palestinian death cult.
When Paterson hoisted the Palestinian flag outside City Hall three years ago, it marked one of the first times that the flag had been raised outside an American municipal building to recognize the Palestinian culture and people.
That is changing. On Friday, North Bergen raised the flag outside its municipal hall, and Clifton will do the same next month. Local leaders say the ceremonies are a nod to the contributions and growing prominence of Palestinian Americans, as well as a reminder of their fight for statehood in the Middle East.
When he says "fight for statehood" he means, of course, "terrorism."
C'mon guys, kill a few more children, these morons will give you a bigger flag next year.
"We have a great deal of respect for our Arab community that serves on our school board, in our housing authority, as teachers and in other prominent roles," said North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco, who spoke at the flag raising. "We try to make this a town that includes everyone, and I believe this shows we succeeded."
I'll bet he didn't even notice the Jews cowering in their bomb shelters.
Do they feel "included?"
Did he even ask?
Municipalities often host flag-raising events to recognize local ethnic groups, but this ceremony carries extra significance and scrutiny because of the difficult path to Palestinian statehood. Palestinians have pushed for sovereignty, but have been paralyzed in negotiations with Israel, which occupies the land of their intended state.
Utter rubbish.
The "occupied" land was surrendered, after the Arabs attacked Israel, and Israel defeated them.
Four times they tried to conquer the Jews.
Four times they lost.
So of course now they "negotiate," at the point of a gun, killing civilians, bombing buses, maiming children, stabbing mothers, launching rockets, and pretending they're "victims" of "occupation."
Remember when the British claimed Americans were "occupying" the Colonies?
Yeah, they tried coming back, and we kicked their butts again in 1812.
Then they stopped complaining.
So, get a clue Palestinians.
You, and your Arab Muslim homies, blew it.
You lost.
Now, you need to get lost.
As in, scram.
Give it up.
Stop pretending you're entitled to anything.
Because, you're losers, and well, losers don't get to call the shots.
Except, apparently, in Clifton, North Bergen, and Paterson.
I wonder what Mayor Sacco and his enlightened humanitarians would say if some guys from Mississippi showed up wanting to fly a Rebel Flag? You know, to show Confederate pride, and remind people of the struggle for state's rights.
Yeah, I'll bet that's a "hate crime."
Maybe if they launched a few rockets over the Mason-Dixon line...
Nah, that's crazy talk. Only "peaceful Palestinians" can do that.

Her callousness is beyond the pale. Because according to Hillary Clinton, nobody died in Libya on her watch.
Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton committed her second gaffe in as many days on the campaign trail Monday night, claiming that the U.S. "didn't lose a single person" in Libya during her time as secretary of state.
Clinton made the comment defending her push for regime change in the war-torn North African nation at an Illinois town hall hosted by MSNBC.
"Now, is Libya perfect? It isn't," Clinton said. After contrasting her approach toward Libya with the ongoing bloodshed in Syria's civil war, Clinton said "Libya was a different kind of calculation and we didn't lose a single person ... We didn't have a problem in supporting our European and Arab allies in working with NATO."
U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, information officer Sean Smith, and former Navy SEALS Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were unavailable for comment.
Hillary Clinton is a despicable person. I'm not sure she's even human; not when she so soullessly forgets the four brave Americans who perished while she dithered and her boss slept.
I can't understand people who still support her. They truly must have hearts of stone. How do they in good conscience associate themselves with such abject evil, knowing that Hillary's lawlessness is unbounded, and far more insidious than even Barack Obama's? Everything this hideous harridan touches reeks of corruption and sleaze. She makes Marie Antoinette look like Mother Teresa.
Wanna bet she blames her memory lapse on a YouTube video? Because, what
difference, at this point, does it make?

First it was Barack Obama who said his regulations on coal companies would make electricity rates "necessarily skyrocket."
Now Hillary Clinton is doing him one better. She's promising to put every coal company out of business and every coal miner out of a job.
"Vote for me, you'll be unemployed!" doesn't exactly seem like a winning strategy, but hey, what do I know?
Because we must all sacrifice something on the altar of Climate Change and coal is this week's bogeyman.
Interestingly I had this very conversation with a Hillary supporter on Saturday night. She was introduced to me as friend-of-a-friend and we got chatting about our teenage daughters, who happen to be the same age.
We were discussing the awkwardness of watching teen girls navigate their way around boys, and how yes our daughters are noticing boys, and more importantly how boys are noticing them, when she states matter-of-factly, "my daughter likes this one boy, but his family are Republicans" (with of course all the contempt you can imagine she could muster). Followed immediately by, "not like us and everyone here of course, we're all good Democrats." And then rounded out with, "she's going to make it her mission to convert him into a Democrat."
Humpf. Presumptuous, eh?
I tried to demur; it wasn't my party and I was there to have a good time. But she moved in for the kill. "Can you believe they're voting for Marco Rubio? He doesn't believe in Climate Change!"
Uh, oh. Danger Will Robinson! Warning! Warning!
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!
"Actually, lots of people don't believe it's man-made," I said. "Most of the temperature fluctuations could be attributable to sunspots, and besides there hasn't been any measurable warming for the past 19 years. Even many climate scientists now acknowledge this 'pause'."
"You don't believe in climate change!" she exclaimed with that patented wide-eyed smile liberals all seem to have perfected when winding up to "educate" us neanderthals.
But I cut her off. "No, I don't believe in the radical solutions being put forth to combat the problem. For example, look at how many people have lost their jobs in coal mining. Towns are devasted, people are living in poverty, the jobs are all gone."
"Well, then they should just be retrained for green jobs," she decreed, as if waving a magic wand will bring prosperity back to Appalachia.
"That's not so simple, and besides who's going to pay for all that? Green energy is already more expensive."
"They should just learn how to do something else," she insisted.
"Which is why we should put engineers in charge of this problem instead of politicians," I said. "Engineers can find ways to keep cost-effective fossil fuels in use until the green energy industry really gets going."
Which to her credit, she was at least willing to think about, before we moved on to other, less contentious topics.
I bring this up because as it turns out Hillary pushed the same "let 'em make solar panels" mantra right after she told all those coal workers they were screwed.
The thing is though, she doesn't have a plan for how that will happen.
And the people affected might not want to believe she'll help them, not if they remember her saying, "We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."
In this case, "the common good" is Gaia worship. So, who knows, after she's done wiping out the coal industry she could go after oil, or gas, or the left's old favorite bugaboo, nuclear power. Anything to appease the eco-warriors!
The real (and sad) point of all this is, even though we now have a presidential candiate who's openly telling people she's going to destroy their livelihood, most of those folks are "good Democrats" and they'll blindly vote for her anyway.
Sigh.

I'll bet you thought the fight over cracking into the San Bernadino terrorist's iPhone is about national security and fighting terrorism.
Nope.
Obama let the real reason slip on Friday.
U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday made a passionate case for mobile devices to be built in such a way as to allow government to gain access to personal data if needed to prevent a terrorist attack or enforce tax laws.
Speaking at the South by Southwest festival in Texas, Obama said he could not comment on the legal case in which the FBI is trying to force Apple Inc. to allow access to an iPhone linked to San Bernardino, California, shooter Rizwan Farook.
But he made clear that, despite his commitment to Americans' privacy and civil liberties, a balance was needed to allow some intrusion when needed.
When is intrusion "needed?"
When the IRS is after you!
"What mechanisms do we have available to even do simple things like tax enforcement because if in fact you can't crack that at all, government can't get in, then everybody is walking around with a Swiss bank account in their pocket."
There you have it folks.
We can't have privacy because the government needs to know if we're paying our fair share.
How else will he fund his utopian social justice programs unless he squeezes every last dime out of our pockets?
And if the IRS can't dig into our mobile phones how will they continue to persecute right wing extremists?
Let's call it the "Lois Lerner Exception" to the Fourth Amendment, shall we, because I'm sure it's something the Founding Fathers envisioned when they wrote the Constitution.
His demand is totalitarianism, pure and simple. The State must know all. The State must control all. All bow before the State!
Sorry Barry. Encryption means Liberty. And like a smart guy once said,

The lawlessness of this administration continues unbounded.
Congress has not ratified that pointless climate treaty Obama bragged about in Paris last year.
And Congress has never appropriated money for a UN climate change slush fund either.
But that didn't stop the State Department from sending $500 million of our tax dollars to this boondoggle, as down payment on a $3 billion dollar allotment to burnish Obama's green legacy.
Two Republican senators are accusing the State Department of misusing taxpayer dollars by green-lighting $500 million for a United Nations climate change program without first obtaining congressional approval.
The senators now are demanding the department justify the "cloak-and-dagger" contribution to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) — even threatening legal action.
"Lawyers cannot replace the constitutional requirement that only Congress can appropriate money," Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., said, adding that he's demanding a "full legal analysis."
Gardner, in a statement to FoxNews.com, alleged the department was trying to "wave a magic wand and write a half-billion dollar check to a Green Climate Fund that they admit was never authorized by Congress."
The Obama administration — despite resistance from congressional Republicans — has committed the U.S. to contributing $3 billion to the fund, a program established by the United Nations to help poor countries adopt clean energy technologies to address climate change.
And like every other UN program to "help poor countries," the bulk of the money will end up in some dictator's pocket, while "climate change" marches on, unabated.
The State Department acknowledges the funding was never explicitly approved by Congress — but argues the department was within its authority to shift funding to the Green Climate Fund, because Congress did not explicitly prohibit funding the GCF.
Ah yes, the "you didn't say I couldn't" dodge. What is this? Kindergarten?
Congress also didn't say you couldn't give everybody in your department a new car; so go ahead, give it a shot.
Along with Gardner, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., maintains Congress has not allocated any funding for what he calls the "international climate change slush fund" and has in fact "prohibited the transfer of funds to create new programs."
Barrasso said because the GCF technically is a new program and not authorized by Congress, the department may have violated the Anti-Deficiency Act, a law that prohibits federal agencies from obligating or expending funds in advance or in excess of an appropriation.
According to Politico, Barrasso is prepared to go to court over the issue and to seek prosecution of individuals if they are found to have violated the Anti-Deficiency Act.
That's the ticket. Name and shame the miscreants. Make their lives miserable.
The only way to stop bureaucrats from overstepping their authority is to hit them where it hurts.
Which is why in the next fiscal year Congress should deduct $500 million from State's travel and conference budget.
Because I assure you, that will get their attention.

Joe DiVincenzo will tell us he must raise taxes, to provide critically needed county services like housing.
On Sunday, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. announced that two giraffes from Florida — Lincoln and Milo — arrived at Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange.
In July, Essex County officials announced plans to construct a $7 million giraffe exhibit, tentatively slated to open this spring.
The 200 by 100 foot exhibit area will feature a climate-controlled barn, three-acres of land designed to mimic the African Savannah and multiple public viewing areas, county officials previously stated.
Closed circuit cameras will also be installed in the barn so the giraffes can be viewed on a video screen in the Zoo Cafe.
Because giraffes come before the homeless. And the hungry. And the unemployed.
Unless all our other problems are already solved and nobody bothered to tell me.
Which could be the case.
But somehow I doubt it.
Members of the freeholder board said they will be reviewing the budget over the next month. Newly elected board president Britnee Timberlake said she hopes to focus on "everything dealing with social services" in the budget. "We need to service all people (in the county). I feel that the county is lacking in areas…to provide social services in the most effective way possible."
Do tell.
"We are not where we want to be yet," DiVincenzo said, pointing out that the county has high foreclosure and unemployment rates, and a high percentage of its population seeking government assistance.
Ah, but now we have giraffes.
Maybe the giraffes will eat cake.

I should have known it was too good to be true when Trump said he's against expanding the abusive H1-B visa program that displaces so many American tech workers.
Because during last night's, er, "debate," he backtracked, flip-flopped, and obfuscated:
Republican front-runner Donald Trump said Thursday he is softening his stance on visas for highly-skilled workers.
"I'm changing. We need highly-skilled people in this country," Trump said during the Fox News Republican debate in Detroit. "If we can't do it, we will get them in."
Trump's stance toward awarding H1-B visas is different from the one he takes on his campaign website, which argues that more visas for highly-skilled foreigners would "decimate American workers."
"So you are abandoning the position on your website?" Fox News debate moderator Megyn Kelly asked.
"I'm changing it and I'm softening the position because we have to have talented people in this country," Trump said.
Sigh.
I wish we had "talented people" running for president in this country.
Because if you watched last night's mudfest, these bozos are an embarrassment.

Time is running out. Ben Carson saw the writing on the wall. Marco Rubio and John Kasich need to follow suit, sooner rather than later.
Because the GOP must unite behind one candidate, and that candidate must be someone who not only can beat Hillary Clinton, but someone who is the antithesis of Hillary Clinton.
That candidate is Ted Cruz.
Ted Cruz is the only candidate who is fully committed to Constitutional conservative principles.
Ted Cruz is the only candidate who will deliberately and effectively shrink the size and scope of the federal government.
Ted Cruz is the only candidate who has pledged to fully repeal Obamacare, and the only candidate who has not suggested that some form of "single payer" is a viable replacement.
Ted Cruz is the only candidate with the guts to call out the Ethanol mandate for what it is, an anti-consumer and ineffective boondoggle.
Ted Cruz is a true defender of our Second Amendment rights.
Ted Cruz understands how to get Americans back to work again by taking away the roadblocks to success imposed by an over-arching regulatory state.
Ted Cruz is firmly behind enforcement of all of our immigration laws.
And most importantly, Ted Cruz will appoint judges in the mold of Antonin Scalia. Judges who will uphold the Constitution. Judges who will interpret the law instead of rewriting the law.
I know. I know what some of you are going to say. I know that Donald Trump is the flavor of the month. I know that you guys are determined to stick it the GOP establisment. I know that Trump pushes all of your buttons. I know you believe Trump stands for Truth, Justice, and The American Way.
And I also know that he's playing you.
Donald Trump is a Republican, and a conservative, of convenience. His conversion, such as it is, from New York liberal Democrat to ostensibly conservative Republican, is hardly heartfelt. He praises Planned Parenthood. He extolls the virtues of Eminent Domain. He suggested replacing Obamacare with Medicare for Everyone. He's a New York crony capitalist, more interested in making deals than in growing the economy and promoting entrepreneurship. And he really doesn't think very highly of his supporters' motivations.
Then there's this latest poll, in which even after his supposedly resounding Super Tuesday victories, Trump still falls short against Hillary Clinton in a head-to-head matchup. Whereas Real Clear Politics puts Ted Cruz on top come November.
Why? Because Trump's allure is bolstered by Democrats crossing over to vote in open GOP primaries. If you think those Democrats are going to cross over again in November, well, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn you can have, cheap.
But if you won't listen to me, at least listen to Thomas Sowell on Trump being "the point of no return."
After seven long years of domestic disasters and increasing international dangers, the next President of the United States will need extraordinary wisdom, maturity, depth of knowledge and personal character to rescue America.
Instead, if the polls are an indication, what we may get is someone with the opposite of all these things, a glib egomaniac with a checkered record in business and no track record at all in government — Donald Trump.
If so, the downward trajectory of America over the past seven years may well continue on into the future, to the point of no return….
Trump's acting like a bull in a china shop may appeal to some voters but, in the world as it is, he may well cost us our last chance to recover from the great dangers into which the Obama administration has gotten this nation.
We already have an ego-driven, know-it-all president who will not listen to military or intelligence agency experts. Do we need to tempt fate by having two in a row?
Appealing as Trump and the comeuppance of the GOP establishment would be, we have bigger fish to fry. Unless you want to conduct the 2020 election in Russian. Or, God forbid, Arabic.
The Republican party must unite. And if Lindsay Graham of all people can see that, so can you.
As Donald Trump racks up wins on Super Tuesday, many of the anti-Trump crowd are suggesting candidates for the GOP to rally behind.
Senator Lindsey Graham made a surprising suggestion — Ted Cruz. Graham has long been a vocal critic of the Texas senator, ran against him, and endorsed one of his opponents.
Water under the bridge. Bygones must be bygones now.
So instead of fighting him, Marco Rubio should team up with Ted Cruz. For his part, Cruz should endorse Rubio as his VP. As a team they'd be unstoppable, and Rubio will have 8 years to prepare for his next White House run.
Cruz is the GOP's best shot at extending an olive branch to Trump supporters, channelling their anger about issues like immigration into a credible shot at the White House. Although Cruz has few friends among the Washington establishment, putting Rubio on the ticket could satisfy party leaders who fear Cruz can't win a general election or govern once he reaches the Oval Office. If Rubio gets out now and Cruz names him as VP, the two could likely combine forces to Make Donald Drumpf Again.
Read the whole thing. Then try telling me that a "Cruzio" ticket isn't just the thing to truly make America great again.

Gas up the private jet Maurice, Leonardo DiCaprio needs to get his Oscar to Brussels, STAT.
Of all the stakeholders at the negotiating table in Paris this past December, the EU was perhaps the most vociferous in its attempt to try and hammer out an international climate treaty. The document the summit produced requires nations to submit plans how they'll reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, and notably lacks any sort of robust enforcement mechanism. Now, it seems the EU ought to be thankful that the climate treaty turned out to be so flimsy, as it's on track to emit two billion more tons of carbon dioxide than was agreed three months ago, according to a European Commission document.
Uh, oh. Maybe the Euroweenies weren't watching TV Sunday night.
"Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating."
Leo should probably bring the yacht too. You know, in case anyone over there still won't stop procrastinating.
Carbon prices will rise too slowly to cut industrial emissions as much as needed, says a confidential note prepared for MEPs on the environment committee, which the Guardian has seen. […]
"The current proposals are not consistent with what was agreed in Paris and they are not even in line with what's necessary to stay below 2C," [Green MEP Bas Eickhout] told the Guardian. "What kind of signal is that sending our partners? These Emissions Trading System (ETS) numbers need to be changed now to make them consistent with the Paris agreement."
And by "now" he means 2019, at the earliest. Maybe 2020. Delivery of The Plan is being delayed, long past the treaty's "required" due date of 2018.
They've got their excuses reasons, of course, most of which
boil down to "it's too hard."
Still, whatever the reasoning, it's a bad look for the EU — supposedly the greenest bloc of countries in the developed world — already to be flouting the review process of a treaty drafted not 12 weeks ago.
Gee, a cynic like me might think they weren't serious.
But I'm sure another celebrity tongue-lashing or two will set them straight.
Because that's what works so well here, right?

When DC Republicans tell President Obama they won't hold hearings or vote on anyone he nominates to replace Antonin Scalia, that's obstructionism, and Democrats cry foul.
But, when NJ Democrats tell Governor Christie (for the sixth year in a row) they won't hold hearings or vote on his nominee to fill a vacant state Supreme Court seat, that "preserves judicial independence."
Governor Christie's pick to fill a longstanding vacancy on the state Supreme Court will not be considered by the Senate, whose job it is to approve judicial nominees, its leader said Tuesday morning.
The nominee, David F. Bauman, was put forth by Christie on Monday in a State House news conference in which he urged a quick hearing to "stop this six-year roadblock on filling this seat."
But Senate President Stephen Sweeney, who was out of state Monday, rejected the idea.
"This nominee will not have a hearing and the only way I will consider a Christie nominee is if the governor preserves judicial independence by submitting a Democrat for the Court," said Sweeney, who controls the Senate calendar and agenda.
Because only Democrats preserve judicial independence; Republicans are ideologues who hate puppies, babies, and apple pie. Or so Sweeney would have us believe.
The reality is that Democrats have politicized the judiciary in this state, demanding continuation of blatantly activist rulings that align with their progressive political ideals. They don't want an independent state Supreme Court, they want a court that always rules in their favor. They lack the votes to override Christie's vetoes so they need to push their agenda via judicial activism.
And that means blocking nominees who rely on the rule of law rather than the shibboleths of social justice.
So spare me the sanctimony of Washington Democrats. I find it funny that Obama is meeting with Mitch McConnell and Chuck Grassley this morning, just to whine about how they're "disrespecting" him, or something. And as if his team didn't make the rules in the first place.
If he really wants to break the logjam, Obama should haul Cory Booker and Bob Menendez and the lefty members of our state's House delegation into the Oval Office and tell them to get Steve Sweeney off the stick pronto. Then maybe his hypocrisy won't be so obvious.
Yeah, OK, you can stop laughing, because I'm not holding my breath either.
